How to remove a photo's background on your phone (Android and iPhone) free

Updated: July 2026 · Reading time: 5 minutes

Most photos we want to cut out are on the phone, not the computer. The problem is that almost every store app wants you to install, create an account, or slaps a watermark on the result. The good news: you don't need to install anything. You can remove a photo's background right from the phone's browser, free, and without the photo leaving your device. This guide explains how, on both Android and iPhone.

No app: why doing it in the browser is better

Step by step (Android and iPhone)

  1. Open PhotoCut Studio from the phone's browser (Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet…).
  2. Tap to upload a photo from the gallery or take one with the camera on the spot.
  3. Apply the AI Cutout: it separates the subject from the background right there on the phone.
  4. Touch up with your finger anything left over or missing; zoom in for fine edges (hair, fingers).
  5. Keep the background transparent or add a color, and download the PNG to your gallery.

Tips for a good result on a small screen

What if the photo is very large?

Modern phones take many-megapixel photos. That's fine for the cutout, but on phones with little memory a huge photo can take a few extra seconds to process. If it stutters, try a slightly smaller version of the same photo: for most uses (social, profile, stickers) you don't need the maximum resolution.

What you do next, from the same phone

Once you have the cutout, everything stays on the phone: you can give it a new background, keep it transparent for a WhatsApp sticker, or export a round avatar. You never need to move the photo to the computer.

We tested it: it runs the same on the phone

The AI Cutout needs no app: the same model as on the computer runs in the phone's browser. You load the photo from the gallery, tap AI Cutout and that's it. The first time takes a bit longer because it downloads the model (4.6 MB); after that it's instant.

And since everything happens on the phone, the photo isn't uploaded to any server — important if it's a personal image.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install an app to remove the background on my phone?

No. PhotoCut Studio works inside your phone's browser, so it takes no space and asks for no install permissions. You open the site, add the photo and you're done.

Does it work the same on Android and iPhone?

Yes. Since it runs in the browser, it works on Android (Chrome, Samsung Internet) and iPhone/iPad (Safari, Chrome) with no differences. On very old phones, very large photos may take a bit longer.

Is my photo uploaded to a server from my phone?

No. The cutout happens on the phone itself, inside the browser. The photo isn't uploaded to any server or stored once you close the tab.

Does it use a lot of mobile data?

Very little. Since the photo isn't uploaded or downloaded from a server to be processed, data use is limited to loading the site the first time. After that you cut out several photos without spending data on each one.
