Add a green background to a photo

Free tool · No sign-up · Your image is never uploaded

A green background is associated with the natural, the eco and the healthy: organic products, wellness, sustainability, plants. This tool removes the original background and replaces it with the green you choose, free, and your photo never leaves the browser. And since "green background" also makes people think of a green screen, we clear up the difference below.

Green background vs. green screen (chroma key)

This is the most common confusion, so let's settle it:

When green is the best choice

The detail: don't let green merge with the subject

If the subject wears green or there's foliage, a same-tone background can "merge" them. Choose a green clearly distinct from the subject's tone and check the outline zoomed in. Not sure which exact green? Grab it from a reference image with the color palette & HEX tool.

Step by step

  1. Open the photo in the editor.
  2. Use the AI Cutout and refine the edges with the brushes.
  3. In Export, pick Color mode and set the green HEX (e.g. #1f9d55).
  4. Export as JPG/PNG; or transparent if you'll replace the background later.

Frequently asked questions

Is a green background the same as a green screen (chroma key)?

No. A green screen is put there to be replaced later. If that's your case, export transparent directly and skip the chroma.

Which green should I use?

A balanced green like #1f9d55 for natural themes; for a brand, its exact green. Avoid matching the subject's clothing or foliage.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser; the photo is never uploaded or stored.
