Add a black background to a photo

Free tool · No sign-up · Your image is never uploaded

A black background conveys something white can't: elegance, drama, and total focus on the subject. It's the favorite for premium products, tech, jewelry, cosmetics and portraits with character. This tool removes the original background and replaces it with black in a couple of steps, free, and your photo never leaves the browser.

When black is the best choice

The key detail: don't let the subject merge

The main challenge of a black background is the opposite of white: instead of exposing leftovers, it swallows dark edges. If the subject has black hair, dark clothing or shadowed areas, those edges can vanish into pure black. Two fixes:

Step by step

  1. Open the photo in the editor.
  2. Use the AI Cutout and refine the edges (watch the subject's dark areas).
  3. In Export, pick Color mode and set #000000 (or #0a0a0a).
  4. Export as JPG or PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Pure black or a very dark grey?

Pure black (#000000) gives maximum drama; a very dark grey (#0a0a0a) keeps the effect and helps separate the outline if the subject is also dark.

Why does my subject disappear into the black?

Its dark edges have low contrast against the background. Check the outline zoomed in and try a slightly lighter-than-black background.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser; the photo is never uploaded or stored.
