How to digitize a signature with a transparent background (PNG) free

Updated: July 2026 · Reading time: 5 minutes

You need to sign a PDF, a contract or a form, and all you have is your signature on paper. The solution almost everyone tries —photograph it and paste it— fails on one detail: the photo brings the white paper background, so when you insert it over the document a white box appears covering the text. A well-made digitized signature goes with a transparent background: just the stroke, no paper. This guide shows how to get it in a couple of minutes, without uploading your signature to any server.

The starting photo is almost everything

A clean signature starts with a good photo or scan. Before cutting anything, take care of this:

Step by step

  1. Sign with a dark marker on plain white paper and take a straight-on photo, with good light and no shadows.
  2. Open the signature photo in PhotoCut Studio.
  3. Use the box to keep only the signature area, and the Magic wand or the brushes to remove the white paper around the stroke.
  4. In Export, choose Transparent mode: only the signature remains, on an empty background.
  5. Download as PNG, the only format that keeps transparency, ready to insert into your document.

We tested it: the ink on transparent

You scan or photograph your signature on paper and want only the ink, without the white background. The Magic wand (or the auto cutout) removes the light paper background and leaves the strokes on transparent. Raise the edge feather a little so the line isn't jagged.

Export as a transparent PNG and you can insert the signature into a PDF, a contract or a document with no white box. The image never leaves your device.

Why PNG and not JPG

It's the number-one mistake when digitizing signatures. JPG doesn't keep transparency: it always fills the background with a color, almost always white. If you insert a JPG signature over a contract, it drags that white rectangle and covers whatever is below. PNG keeps the transparent background, so only the stroke shows over the document. If your editor supports it, WebP also works, but PNG is the most compatible with Word, Google Docs and PDF readers.

How to insert it into your document

Image signature vs. digital signature: not the same

Worth clarifying so there are no surprises. Inserting an image of your signature into a document is perfect for informal agreements, internal documents, letters or forms that just ask you to "sign here". But it's not the same as a certified, legally valid electronic signature: processes that require an advanced electronic signature need an approved platform that verifies your identity. For everything else, an inserted PNG signature solves 90% of cases.

Your signature doesn't leave your device

A signature is sensitive data. In PhotoCut Studio the cutout happens entirely in your browser: the photo isn't uploaded to any server or stored. Even so, save the resulting PNG with the same care as your paper signature and don't share it needlessly.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the signature have to be PNG and not JPG?

Because JPG doesn't keep transparency: it always fills the background with a color, usually white. If you insert a JPG signature over a contract, a white rectangle covers the text below. PNG keeps the transparent background, so only the ink shows.

Is it safe to digitize my signature here?

The processing is 100% local: the photo of your signature isn't uploaded to any server or stored when you close the tab. Even so, treat the resulting PNG with the same care as your paper signature.

How do I get a clean stroke with no paper stains?

Start with a good photo: dark marker on plain white paper, even light and no shadows. Then crop the signature area with the box and use the brushes to erase paper leftovers before exporting transparent.

Does it work to sign a PDF or a contract?

It works to insert the image of your signature in a PDF, Word or Google Docs. It's not the same as a certified legal digital signature: processes that require an advanced electronic signature need an approved platform. For most informal or internal documents, an inserted PNG signature is enough.
